STD testing can involve one of 4 different methods, depending on what is being tested for:

Urine specimen
Swab of area
Blood sample
Clinical/visual diagnosis by a physician (this is a very powerful tool and can often diagnose certain STDs without testing or in conjunction with testing)

These tests are usually collected and sent to a lab for processing.

The typical timeframe for STD test results often depends on the type of test performed:

Urine – 1-3 days
Swab - Same day up to 7 days
Blood – 1-5 days
Clinical/visual diagnosis by a physician – Same day

Some swabs, such as those for bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, can produce results the same day. When we receive the results of your tests, a healthcare provider will contact you via telephone at your preferred contact number to review these results in confidence.

In most cases, health insurance plans cover STD testing, but coverage can vary depending on your specific insurance policy. Review your insurance policy or contact your insurance provider to confirm coverage. Keep in mind that if you do have coverage, you may still be responsible for co-pays, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket costs. University Hospitals Urgent Care accepts most private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and Medicare Advantage.

If you do not have insurance or do not want to use your insurance, no problem! We offer competitive self-pay rates for patients without insurance.

If you choose to pay by credit card, debit card, or health savings account (HSA), the charge will appear on your monthly statement as simply “WellStreet Urgent Care.” Your test purchase will not be identifiable.

The time it takes for an STD to show up on a test can vary depending on the specific STD and the type of test being used. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are usually detectable within a few days to weeks after exposure, whereas HIV and hepatitis B or C can take several months.

It is generally recommended to undergo STD testing at least once a year, even if you are in a monogamous relationship and have no symptoms. This helps ensure early detection and treatment of any potential infections. If you have a new partner or multiple sex partners or are at higher risk for contracting STDs, consider more frequent testing.

STDs can be caused by different pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi, so treatment depends on the pathogen in question. Treatment options may include:

Antibiotics are often prescribed for bacterial STDs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. It's important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed to ensure effective treatment.
Antiviral medications are used to manage viral STDs such as HIV, herpes, and hepatitis B and C are managed using antiviral medications. In the case of HIV, antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the standard treatment to control the virus and reduce its impact on the immune system.
Antifungal medications can be administered topically or orally for fungal infections such as genital warts.
Parasitic infection treatments may be required to eliminate parasites that cause trichomoniasis or public lice.

It's important to note that not all STDs can be cured. Viral infections such as HIV, herpes, and hepatitis B are lifelong conditions, but treatments are available to manage symptoms, reduce the risk of transmission, and slow disease progression.

There is no way to definitively determine if you have an STD without undergoing proper testing. Many STDs do not show noticeable symptoms or may have symptoms that resemble other conditions, making them difficult to diagnose without medical testing.

If you suspect you may have been exposed to an STD or are sexually active, don't delay care. Early detection and treatment can help prevent further health complications and reduce the risk of transmitting the infection to others.
